If you're interested at all in gaining a understanding of the current dispute between RIM (the makers of Blackberry) and NTP (the supposed patent holders), read this article from Globe and Mail. I love the part about RIM's attorneys and their attempt to a sneak fraudulent product demo past the judge, opposing counsel, and the jury. The fraud was discovered by NTP's attorneys and revealed to the jury. Consequently, an enormous verdict was reached in less than four hours. What a collossal mistake on the part of RIM's attorneys.
I seriously doubt RIM will ever be shutdown; over 2 million of their users are apparently federal government employees. Would the government really shoot themselves in the foot like that?
Whatever happens, RIM will pay dearly for not taking NTP's claim seriously years ago.
